Hitler's Early Years: 1889 - 1913
Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau, Upper Austria to parents Klara and Alois in 1889. Growing up, he had a troubled relationship with his father, and dropped out of high school in 1905. In 1908, he moved to Vienna after his parents and siblings died, to pursue his dream to be a painter.
"It was a dreadful blow. I had honored my father, but my mother I had loved. Her death put a sudden end to all my high-flown plans. Poverty and hard reality compelled me to take a quick decision. I was faced with the problem of somehow making my own living. With a suitcase full of clothes and underwear in my hand and an indomitable will, I set out for Vienna"
While there, Hitler was constantly surrounded by various nationalistic and anti-Semitic beliefs. He was eventually unsuccessful in becoming a painter, as he failed the local academy's entrance exam. Impoverished, he later moved to Munich, Germany in 1913 to avoid conscription into Austria-Hungary's army.
