World War II and the Fall of the Reich: 1939-1945
In September 1940, the Tripartite Pact was signed between Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan, formalizing the Axis Powers. By the end of the year, almost all of Europe is conquered, save for Great Britain. In 1941, Hitler launched an enormous invasion into the USSR: Operation Barbarossa. Ultimately this failed and as a result, Hitler opened a second front, making it impossible to win.

In 1943, the Allies conquered North Africa and Italy, with the Soviets invading from the east. The Normandy Landings of 1944 made possible a final invasion of Germany. Finally, in May of 1945, Berlin surrendered, ending the war in Europe.
