In violation of the Versailles Treaty, Hitler begins to rearm Germany. In 1936, he invaded the Rhineland, returning Germany's original boundaries. Two years later, after the Munich Conference, Hitler annexed his native Austria, the Sudetenland and later the rest of Czechoslovakia in 1938. The goal: to acquire Lebensraum ("living space") for the German people.
Hitler's sets his eyes on Poland next. After signing a nonaggression pact with Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, the Nazis invade Poland on September 1 1939, starting the Second World War in Europe.
